Dr. Jon Smieja

Dr. Smieja works to accelerate the transition from a linear to a circular economy. He is vice president and senior analyst on the circular economy at GreenBiz Group, where he leads the company’s circularity strategy, programs and partnerships. Jon’s team connects stakeholders and solutions from across the value chain to cultivate a community of practice, in which professionals are empowered to transform products, organizations, industries and systems.

Jon leads the Circularity conference, the largest circular economy event in North America, launched in 2019 by his predecessor Lauren Phipps. He writes Circularity Weekly, an industry-leading newsletter on new ideas and transformations (as well as the challenges) in the transition from our current economic system. Jon is a GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals certified practitioner, sits on the Minnesota Leadership Advisory Board for USGBC, and has more than 9 years experience in corporate sustainability at leading building product manufacturers. Jon holds bachelor’s a degree in Chemistry from the University of St. Thomas (MN) and an M.S. and PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of California-San Diego. He lives in Mahtomedi, Minnesota with his wife, two daughters and very annoying dog.
